| Acceleration is one of those words for which we have a common meaning and a meaning that is specific to the field of physics. Ask the average person on the street and they will define acceleration as "speeding up." However, this is just a portion of the full meaning of acceleration as used in physics. In physics, acceleration is defined as a change in velocity. Considering this definition closely, we remember that velocity is defined as speed in a given direction. Therefore changing the velocity of an object means changing its speed (rate of motion), its direction of travel or both variables. An object experiencing a change of speed or direction is said to be accelerating.Mathematically, we can express acceleration with the following formula:a= (vf - vo)/twhere:a - acceleration
vf - final velocity
vo - original velocity
t - timeThe value for acceleration may be a negative or positive value depending on magnitude of vf and vo, but it is still properly termed acceleration (although we do often call negative acceleration "deceleration").The unit for acceleration takes the form ofvelocity/time2where the time unit for velocity matches the...

| I am starting a reading and math tutor program for K - 12 grade students at my church. I am looking for a print-based program that will allow me to: 1)assess students in math and reading, 2)offer the basic components of reading instruction (phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary development, reading fluency, reading comprehension strategies; 3)offer basic components of math instruction (addition/subtraction, measurement, geometry, operations w/numbers, algebraic thinking, fractions, decimals, persents, integers, pre-algebra; 4)ability to track student progress.Jennifer | |

| Hi, I'm looking for some ideas for some math games to use in center work with my grade 5 class. We are doing a unit on decimals, mixed numbers and fractions. Any ideas would be appreciated. | |

| I am trying to take my ASVAB tests to join the NAVY and while I was in school I was surprisingly good in math, I mean I was taking college level maths my freshman yr in high school. Now for some reason since I have been out of school for like 7 or 8 years its all gone I have no idea what any of this math is. And the thing is that my husband is in the NAVY right now and has told me in order to get into the medical field that I want to get into while in the service I would have score extremely high and I just took a practice test and didnt do so hot. Its kilss me because when I graduated high school I was in the top 50 of my class of 450 with a gpa of 3.7 and now I cant even score high enough on the asvab to get what I want. The minimum score on the test is a 36 and on my practice just now was a 41. Can somebody please help me with the what I need to work on??? I want to be a drug Psychologist in the Naval Hospital and that wont happen if I can tbring that score up by an increasing amount. Its like I have totally forgotten how to even work the problem out on paper let alone in my head like I used to. | |

| THE CLOCK AND THE ANGLES
The angle between the 2 hands of a clock( circular)... ( ignore seconds hand).....is 30 degrees...( of course 330 deg if seen from the other way)... What is the LEAST time time taken to repeat the angle between them( ie 30 and 330 degrees)??? What is the time if the angle is 60 and 90 degrees respctvly..??? The time should be the exact figure...Of course, u can round off very small fractions..Please give the explainations also...

| In all early civilizations, the first expression of mathematical understanding appears in the form of counting systems. Numbers in very early societies were typically represented by groups of lines, though later different numbers came to be assigned specific numeral names and symbols (as in India) or were designated by alphabetic letters (such as in Rome). Although today, we take our decimal system for granted, not all ancient civilizations based their numbers on a ten-base system. In ancient Babylon, a sexagesimal (base 60) system was in use.
In India a decimal system was already in place during the Harappan period, as indicated by an analysis of Harappan weights and measures. Weights corresponding to ratios of 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500 have been identified, as have scales with decimal divisions. A particularly notable characteristic of Harappan weights and measures is their remarkable accuracy. A bronze rod marked in units of 0.367 inches points to the degree of precision demanded in those times. Such scales were particularly important in ensuring proper implementation of town planning rules that required roads of fixed widths to run at right...
