evolved from the Greek lambda and the Semetic lamed.
Due to its smooth sound, L is classified as a liquid. Lowercase L is the narrowest letter of the modern
English alphabet, and has also been proved to be the least identifiable in tests of reading legibility
(compared capitol I to lower-case L). 17th and 18th century typographers tried to work around this
legibility problem by adding a short horizontal stroke to the middle of miniscule Ls, but this practice
was dropped fairly quickly. Typographers since then have alleviated the lower-case L's legibility by
making to higher than other letters.
